A good DBA will be able to teach, and train, others. So how do you find such a person? The answer is easy: you talk with them.
Than, why not ask the most basic questions you can, right from the start? The answer may surprise you, but the conversation is likely to reveal the depth of their experience right from the start.
Here are some basic open ended questions we have listed down which will help you as an interviewee as well interviewer.

- Do you treat your test and
production systems differently? If so, why?
- How do you troubleshoot
problems in your current role?
- What DBA activities you do
everyday?
- What is your typical day like?
- What other parts of your
organization do you interact with and how?
- Do you consider yourself a
development DBA or a production DBA and why?
- What database and overall
architecture would you suggest for testing new middleware without
impacting production?
- Explain one backup and recovery
scenario which you have performed
- What you will do if someone
complain that database is running slow?
- How do you assess my database’s
health?
- How would you approach a
performance problem with a three-tier application?
- How do you test your
backup/recovery procedures?
- How would you support the
upgrade process for multiple applications,with different application
rollout cycles, in the same instance?
- What should consist of DW Team?
- Why we should hire you?
- Can you explain which is the
most difficult scenario which you have faced in your career?
